FRANK mobile website

Background

FRANK helps you find out everything you might want to know about drugs (and some stuff you don’t).

Brief

The FRANK website was designed for standard computer browsers rather than mobile devices. The Department of Health required a mobile-optimised site for users who were unwilling/unable to use the home computer, or were out at an event and required urgent information to assist someone who had taken drugs.

It was important that pay-as you-go users encountered a data-light site, but that smartphone users could opt for access to the main content-rich site, so the new mobile site was designed to make all the key content easily accessible on most smartphone operating systems and handsets, including iPhone, Android and Blackberry.

Solution

COI worked with developers Profero to develop a site structure and page design to cater for the different ways users navigate through websites (using touch screens, track pads or scroll wheels) on their mobiles.

The pages were built using dynamic CSS to ensure the site looked correct on different mobiles and at different screen resolutions.

A script was used to detect the type of mobile device being used and to serve up a stripped down version of FRANK content from the main site CMS.

The site was tested on iOS 4 and 5, Android 2, Windows 7 and Blackberry 7 operating systems.
